Nobody and Nothing is Beneath You
It’s a mistake to underestimate anyone or anything in life. Who do you think you are? Whether it’s your family, friends, acquaintances, or enemies—at work, home, business, or sports—the world can shock you when you least expect it. The element of surprise makes life exciting and vibrant.
Consider some stunning moments in life where one party underestimated another with dire consequences:
Football: In the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, England and Brazil entered as heavy favorites but faced unexpected defeats against Croatia, a seemingly weaker team on paper. This serves as a powerful reminder: never underestimate your opponent, regardless of appearances.
In your daily experiences, you might have either underestimated someone or been underestimated yourself. For example:
- Judging someone’s strength based on their physique, assuming a lack of muscle means weakness.
- Evaluating someone’s intelligence based on their alma mater or field of study, thinking less of those from lesser-known schools or non-quantitative disciplines.
Such judgments are baseless. Underestimating others can lead to missed opportunities, strained relationships, and countless “what could have beens.”
Start with a 0-0 Mindset
Take a lesson from football: Bayern Munich’s historic 8-2 win over Barcelona in the 2020 Champions League led Thomas Müller to say, “The next game starts with 0-0.” Every new situation should begin with a clean slate.
Walk into every social event, date, job interview, or competition with an open mind and heart. Be receptive to all inputs and ready to be wowed by others.
New experiences and opportunities arise only when you harbor no expectations and remain open.
Not every situation will amaze you, and most times, things won’t go your way. The odds are low. However, the possibility of special moments exists only if you stay open-minded.
Low odds > zero.
Forget past experiences—they are just that, the past. The present is unpredictable and full of potential for greatness.
Just as nobody and nothing is beneath you, the other end of the spectrum is just as true.
Nobody and Nothing is Above You
When someone excels in something you aspire to, it’s easy to let unhealthy comparisons, envy, jealousy, doubt, negativity, and resentment seep in.
You may feel like others are above you and you’re stuck in place, questioning whether you’re good enough or if your efforts are worthwhile.
Here’s where you face two choices:
Path 1 – The Path of Endless Suck
Wallow in self-pity, fixating on others’ achievements and stagnating in your own journey. This path leads nowhere but frustration and inertia. Womp Womp Womp.
Path 2 – The Path of Continuous Transcend
Instead of feeling down – choose to respect, appreciate, and learn from others’ successes. Let’s call it the RAL principle.
Respect:
Acknowledge their achievements as well-deserved. Success is no accident.
Understand that everyone is doing their best, and tearing them down helps no one. Treat others how you’d want to be treated – a little golden rule wouldn’t hurt here right?
Appreciate:
Embrace the idea of surrounding yourself with people doing awesome things. Their success literally means you’re in the right place, pushing yourself to grow.
If you’re not around such people, it’s a sign to seek more meaningful, challenging environments.
Also if you just do the basics of appreciating what they’re doing and being kind…you build strong relationships and you will help each other out…which will make both of you go far together.
Learn:
Observe their craft from a place of curiosity.
What are they excelling at?
What are aspects that you can emulate and lessons you can take?
Do you need to start doing something or stop doing something?
Seeing others thrive exposes your own hidden potential. They inspire you to stretch and grow beyond your comfort zone. After all, you might be helping others do the same thing already!
It’s literally other people that help provide a guiding point for whats possible to achieve and how far you can go. Others push boundaries, shatter records, and become your compass to what’s achievable.
Take some time to write down your reflections.
Once you’ve done that, it’s back to focusing on your own growth.
Life isn’t about you versus others; it’s about you versus you.
And the battle continues.
